COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FREEZER, MECHANICAL, WORK TOP TYPE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIL-F-43934 (GL).
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
1.1 Design and construction. The freezer base with work top shall be electrically operated, self-contained, and 14 cubic foot minimum capacity. The freezer base shall be constructed of stainless steel and shall be equipped with an automatic defrost, two doors, four 6-inch high minimum adjustable legs, and a stainless steel top. The freezer walls and doors shall be insulated with industrial fiberglass, expanded polystyrene, or preformed/foamed-in-place polyurethane. The automatic defrost shall be capable of defrosting when food is stored in freezer. The freezer shall be wired to provide interior lighting when any door is opened. The freezer top shall be flat and shall have sufficient structural strength to be used as a workstation. The approximate dimensions of the freezer base shall be 74 inches long, 36 inches deep, and 36 inches high, including the legs.
1.2 Refrigeration system. The refrigeration system shall be fully automatic and consist of an electric motor driven, air cooled condenser unit with capacitor, stand and motor overload protection, evaporation and temperature control. This unit shall be powered by a compressor, hermetic type thermally or mechanically sealed. These components shall be rigidly mounted to minimize vibrations. The system shall be capable of maintaining an average temperature of 0oF or lower, in an ambient temperature environment of 100oF with compression running time not exceeding 90 percent. The system shall be capable of lowering the temperature of the interior of the empty freezer base from 110oF to 0oF in not more than 8 hours time. The condensate evaporator shall be capable of removing condensation without the use of a plumbing fixture or floor drain.
1.3 Door and shelves. Replaceable gasket seals shall be installed around the outside perimeter of each door. Anti-sweat heaters shall be installed on the perimeter of each door opening for condensation control. Each door shall be hinged on the outer edges to permit opening of both doors from the center of freezer. The freezer shall be provided with two shelves, one per side of wire or sheet metal, molded or stamped of stainless steel, perforated or slotted, steel chrome or zinc plated, baked on laquer coating or finished aluminum alloy.

1.4 Electrical characteristics. The freezer base shall operate on 120 volts, 60 Hertz, single phase power source in the United States and 220 volts, 50 Hertz, single power source overseas.
1.5 Standard compliance. The freezer base shall comply with Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard No.471, National Sanitation Foundation Standards Nos.1 and 7, and National Electrical Manufacturers Association MG-1.
1.6 Identification plate. In addition to the markings required by UL 471, the freezer base shall have an identification plate that includes the contract number and national stock number.
2. QUALITY ASSURANCE.
2.1 Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics and requirements of this description and conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices, and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. When specific quality assurance provisions are specified for any commercial characteristics the contractor shall furnish data resulting from inspection conducted in accordance with the specified quality assurance provisions. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
3. PACKAGING.
3.1 Packaging and packing. Packaging and packing shall be commercial or export, as specified (see 4.2).
3.2 Commercial packaging, and packing. Each freezer base shall be cleaned, preserved, packaged, packed, and unitized in accordance with ASTM D 3951.
3.3 Export.
3.3.1 Export packaging. The legs of the freezer base shall be disassembled. The legs and fasteners shall be packaged in a domestic fiberboard box constructed and closed in accordance with PPP-B-636. The box shall be secured in place inside one of the freezer compartments. The shelves shall be packaged in a PPP-B-636 box and the box rigidly secured within one of the compartments. The outside temperature gauge shall be covered with a fiberboard pad or cushioning material and the pad or material be secured in place with pressure-sensitive tape. The freezer base shall be cleaned, preserved, cushioned, and secured to protect if against corrosion, deterioration and physical damage during shipment and storage.
