COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FREEZER, MECHANICAL, FOOD
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIL-F-43408.
1. CLASSIFICATION. This commercial item description covers frozen food cabinets of the following types and sizes and classes as specified (see 5.2).

2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Design and construction. The freezers shall be upright models, commercial reach-in types, self-contained and mechanically refrigerated. The freezers and interiors shall be constructed of 20-gauge stainless steel or 20-gauge aluminum with a finish of baked on porcelain enamel. The walls and doors shall be insulated with industrial type fiberglass or expanded polystyrene or preformed or foamed-in-place insulation. Insulation shall provide a “U” factor of 0.0295 BTU/hours/sq.ft./ of temperature difference. Insulation thickness shall not exceed 4 inches. The freezers shall be wired to provide interior lighting when a door is opened. A dial or digital thermometer accurate to + 3oF which measures the air temperature in the warmest part of the freezer shall be installed on the top front of each freezer. The freezer shall be equipped with four or six heavy duty adjustable stainless steel legs with a minimum height of 6 inches. Legs shall be provided at or near each corner plus two additional center legs are required for the 65-cubic foot size freezers.
2.2 Refrigeration system. The refrigeration system shall be fully automatic and shall consist of an electrically driven, air cooled condensing unit with evaporator, temperature control, controls for automatic, operations, motor starters and protectors, and an automatic defrost. The automatic defrost shall be capable of defrosting when food is stored in cabinet. The system shall be
